Tips for Starting a New Life in Okinawa: Furniture & Home Goods for Your Island Move
Blogger @owncolorstravel shares insights on travel and lifestyle from sunny Okinawa.

Thinking about relocating to Okinawa? Whether it’s for school, work, or the growing trend of moving to a tropical paradise, around 30,000 people move to Okinawa each year. But even if you’re drawn in by the dream of island life, settling in can come with its challenges—especially when it comes to shopping for daily necessities, furniture, or home appliances after the move.

Okinawa is a car-dependent region, and at first, it can be tricky to figure out where to buy what, or how things might differ from mainland Japan. That’s where local home centers and stylish furniture stores come in—they’re often the hidden gems that make setting up your new life much easier.

In this post, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite interior shops in Okinawa, based on my own experience living here. Whether you’re just starting your new life or looking to refresh your space, I hope this guide helps you find your own island style.

YELLOW BOX in Okinawa City: The Go-To Spot for American and Asian-Style Furniture

Located in Okinawa City, YELLOW BOX offers a unique mix of American imported furniture and Asian-inspired decor. It’s especially perfect for those looking for large statement pieces like sofas and beds with that bold American flair.

The central part of Okinawa, including areas like Kadena, is home to many U.S. military personnel and foreign residents. That means there’s a strong demand for American-style interiors—and YELLOW BOX fits right in. Whether you’re decorating a spacious foreign-style home or just want to bring a vintage or antique vibe into your space, this area makes it easy to find shops with that classic American or eclectic look.

Spacious, American-Sized Comfort—With USB Ports and Cup Holders, Too

Because many of the sofas at YELLOW BOX are made to American specs, the size might not come across clearly in photos—but trust me, they’re big and super comfy compared to typical Japanese models. For example, this sofa measures approximately 218.4 cm (W) x 101.6 cm (D) x 101.6 cm (H)—that’s over 7 feet wide! It even comes with built-in USB ports and cup holders, making it perfect for lounging in style and comfort.

Another cool feature of this store? Prices are displayed in U.S. dollars! This particular sofa is priced at $595 (which is about ¥88,000 at the current exchange rate of ¥147 to $1 as of August 2025). Of course, you can pay in Japanese yen—just ask at the register, and they’ll calculate the total based on the day’s exchange rate.

From Dining Sets to Patio Furniture—Plenty of Affordable Finds

YELLOW BOX also carries a wide range of furniture, from dining tables and bedroom sets to living room pieces and even outdoor patio chairs and tables. You never know what gems you’ll find—there are often great deals and hidden treasures throughout the store. Personally, I shop here too because the prices are pretty reasonable, and the selection fits a variety of styles and needs.

This Shelf Was Love at First Sight—And It’s Now a Favorite in My Home

I actually fell in love with this shelf the moment I saw it and ended up taking it home. I’ve been using it ever since, and it fits beautifully in my modern Asian-style room. It’s definitely one of my favorite pieces!

Feels Like You’re in an American Furniture Store—Full of Inspiration

There are also large full-length mirrors and cool, movie-style beds that look like something straight out of a classic American film. Just walking around the store makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a furniture shop overseas—and it’s so fun to imagine how each piece could transform your space.

They offer delivery and assembly within Okinawa, and they’ll even set everything up for you. Just keep in mind that depending on your building’s layout or the floor you live on, there may be additional fees—so it’s a good idea to check in advance.

As for decor, they also carry items like statues and objects that wouldn’t look out of place at a spa in Bali, along with aroma oils and diffusers. If you run a spa or relaxation salon, this place could be a great spot to find unique, calming pieces to enhance your space.

There’s also a section on the same property dedicated to Asian goods, so if you’re into Asian-style interiors, this spot is definitely worth checking out. The selection focuses mostly on small items like baskets, bags, mirrors, and rugs—affordable and easy on the wallet. The pieces also blend well with Okinawa’s tropical vibe, making them great accent pieces for your home.

I ended up buying the basket shown in the top right of the photo. The price tag said $18, but with a discount, it came out to just ¥1,070—such a steal! It’s pretty roomy too, so I think it’ll be super practical. To make a purchase, just take the item straight to the register at YELLOW BOX.

One item I personally loved was this pink mirror—perfect as a playful accent for any room!

・Furnishing Your Home with Budget-Friendly Furniture and Décor

Let me introduce a few go-to places in Okinawa where you can shop for furniture and home goods.

First up, MUJI and Nitori. These two stores have multiple locations across Okinawa, making them reliable options for furnishing your home after moving.

Next is IKEA.

While IKEA doesn’t have a full store in Okinawa, good news for fans of Scandinavian design and great value: an IKEA pick-up center has opened in Ginowan City! You can place orders through the IKEA online store or any IKEA location in Japan, and it typically takes about two weeks for items to arrive. This is a game-changer, especially for those wanting to purchase larger furniture pieces. For smaller items, online shopping is also an option—perfect for anyone who appreciates stylish and functional design.

And as a bonus: MakeMan.

MakeMan is a beloved local home center that Okinawans rely on for everything. With stores in Urasoe, Nago, Gushikawa, Mihama, Ichinichibashi, Newman, Tomigusuku, Ishigaki, and even Miyako Island, it’s accessible from many areas including the outer islands.

From everyday necessities and houseplants to DIY tools, outdoor gear, gardening supplies, camping equipment, pet goods, and bikes—they’ve got it all. After moving to Okinawa, be sure to check out your nearest MakeMan!

Moving to Okinawa from outside the prefecture can be costly, especially with the added distance. But if you choose to furnish your new home after arriving, it can help cut down on moving expenses. Starting fresh with new furniture and home goods in Okinawa is a practical and cost-saving option. I hope this information helps those considering a move to the island!
