Year-End & New Year Travel Recommendation: Bali, Indonesia
While Bali experiences its rainy season from November to March, during my previous New Year’s trip, it was often cloudy or rainy. Instead of focusing on a beach stay, I recommend embracing the season by staying in a lush, nature-filled area surrounded by rice terraces and greenery—a serene way to welcome the New Year.
The flight from Narita to Bali takes about 8 hours via a direct flight. Although direct flights from Japan are limited, using LCCs can make the trip surprisingly affordable.
Bali offers a wide range of experiences:
- Balinese spa treatments for ultimate relaxation
- Temple tours for cultural immersion
- Indonesian cuisine and various beach activities
With a 9-day holiday, there’s no shortage of things to do!
My top recommendation is Ubud, located about 1.5 hours north of Denpasar Airport. Although it’s a bit of a journey, it’s well worth it. Think of Ubud as Bali’s version of Yanbaru in Okinawa—peaceful, green, and full of natural charm.
When it comes to Bali, a private pool villa stay is a must.
One of my top recommendations is the Royal Pita Maha, a 5-star hotel owned by Ubud’s royal family. This expansive property features traditional Balinese decor throughout, offering a dreamlike villa experience. The combination of impeccable hospitality and spacious interiors creates a retreat that truly frees your mind and body.
Imagine listening to the sounds of nature from your private pool—a pure, luxurious healing experience.
Every detail, from the Barong reliefs to the intricately designed pillars, walls, and gates, reflects Balinese craftsmanship. It’s the perfect escape from the busyness of everyday life and an ideal place to welcome the New Year in peace and tranquility.
Aside from Ubud, I also recommend:
- Canggu: Perfect for surfing enthusiasts, with its laid-back vibe, trendy cafes, and vibrant beach scene. It’s ideal for those seeking both adventure and a cool, bohemian atmosphere.
- Sanur: Known for its calmer waters and relaxed ambiance, making it great for families or travelers looking for a peaceful getaway. Sanur also offers beautiful sunrises and a more traditional, serene side of Bali.
Both areas provide unique experiences, catering to different travel styles, whether you’re chasing waves or a quiet retreat.
Canggu is known as Bali’s trendy hotspot, offering a distinct vibe compared to Ubud. The area is filled with stylish cafes and restaurants, many run by Western expats, giving it a modern, international feel.
While Ubud is steeped in tradition and surrounded by nature, Canggu has a more urban-bohemian charm, perfect for those who love surf culture, boutique shopping, and a buzzing social scene. It’s a great destination for travelers looking to experience a different side of Bali’s diverse lifestyle.
Famous Balinese dishes include Nasi Campur (mixed rice), Mie Goreng (fried noodles), Satay (skewered grilled chicken or pork), and Soto Ayam (chicken soup).
Exploring cafes and Balinese craft shops is a fun way to discover unique items like woven Ata bags and other resort-inspired accessories. Finding your favorite shops and wandering through them will make for a refreshing and enjoyable travel experience.
So, after sharing these recommendations in a ranking format, did you find your next dream destination?
With such a long holiday ahead, even though airports might be busy, think of the adventures and new perspectives waiting for you beyond the hustle. It’s the perfect way to refresh and wrap up the year, while welcoming the new one with a fresh mindset. I hope your travels become a wonderful spice to your daily life.
Why not enjoy planning your next adventure?
