For all you resort lovers out there—this one’s for you!
I’m @owncolorstravel, an Okinawa-based blogger sharing travel tips and lifestyle inspiration with a focus on Okinawa’s must-see spots and unique travel ideas. My content is especially helpful for visitors coming from mainland Japan and international travelers looking to explore the islands.
This time, I visited a truly special place in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island: Kouri Island—a small, bridge-connected island known for its stunning views. I’ll be reporting on a one-of-a-kind dining spot here, where you can enjoy authentic Fijian cuisine prepared by the first-ever Fijian chef in Asia!

・Kouri Island

Kouri Island: A Scenic Drive to a Tropical Getaway in Northern Okinawa
Located in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island, Kouri Island is a small, picturesque island surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters—an ideal destination for a scenic Okinawa road trip. As you drive across the impressive Kouri Bridge, which stretches about 2 kilometers over the ocean, the stunning view will take your breath away and instantly lift your spirits.
Kouri Island is often described as a tropical resort paradise, with emerald-green waters and soft white-sand beaches. It’s also known as a “Lover’s Island” thanks to its popular Heart Rock and other romantic spots believed to bring good luck in love. Visitors enjoy relaxing at seaside cafés, exploring hidden beaches, and soaking in the island’s slow-paced charm.
During the summer, Kouri Island tends to attract more tourists. If you’re looking for quieter beaches and peaceful scenery, consider stopping by Yagaji Island, just before you reach Kouri—it’s a great alternative with a laid-back vibe.
From Naha, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by car using the expressway, making it perfect for a day trip from Okinawa’s capital. When I traveled from the Chatan area, it took about 1.5 hours via local roads. If you skip the toll roads and take the scenic route through Onna Village, you’ll be rewarded with some of the clearest ocean views along the way—a must for those who aren’t in a rush.

・ Airando Fiji Restaurant

Airando FIJI Restaurant 294-1 Kouri, Nakijin Village, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture, 905-0406
Discovering Authentic Fijian Cuisine on Kouri Island: Airando FIJI Restaurant
After crossing the stunning Kouri Bridge and driving up a gentle slope, you’ll spot Airando FIJI Restaurant, a hidden gem serving authentic Fijian cuisine right here on Kouri Island. There’s a parking lot directly below the restaurant, so finding a spot is super easy—no stress at all.
Although the weather that day wasn’t perfectly sunny, I was still buzzing with excitement to be back on Kouri Island after so long.
The reason I sought out this place? I’m currently planning a trip to Fiji, and as part of my travel prep, I wondered, “Are there any Fijian restaurants in Okinawa?” That question led me to this one-of-a-kind spot.
Opened in 2019, Airando FIJI Restaurant is run by a Fijian-born owner-chef, which means you can expect truly authentic Fijian flavors. And the fact that it’s located on one of Okinawa’s most scenic islands? That sealed the deal—I knew I had to go. It felt like fate brought me here!

・A Relaxing Ocean View and a Warm Fijian Welcome on Kouri Island
As you walk up the stairs to the second floor and step inside the restaurant, you’re greeted with a cheerful “Bula!” and a big smile—a moment that instantly sets a tropical, international vibe. I hadn’t even been to Fiji yet, but it made me think, “Maybe this is exactly what it feels like to arrive in Fiji—being welcomed with warmth and joy at every corner.” It was a lovely way to start the meal as I was guided to my seat.
By the way, “Bula” is a traditional Fijian greeting, used to say hello with a sense of positivity and good energy. Just hearing it made me feel like I was already on a mini pre-trip to Fiji.

Through the wide-open windows, you’re treated to a breathtaking view of Kouri Bridge and the sparkling ocean—
a truly luxurious setting that makes you want to just sit back, relax, and soak it all in. It’s one of those rare spots where the scenery alone feels like a treat.

Reservations Made Easy—Highly Recommended!
I was able to make a reservation easily through the restaurant’s official LINE app, which was super convenient. I reached out the day before my visit, and they responded quickly—offering suggestions for less busy times, too. Thanks to their helpful advice, I decided to come in after the lunch rush to avoid the crowds.
They also accept same-day reservations by phone, so I definitely recommend reserving in advance, especially during peak hours.

A Taste of Fiji—Beyond the Food
Inside the restaurant, there’s a small section dedicated to Fiji-inspired goods, adding to the island vibe. You’ll find original retort curry packs, along with clothing, bags, and tropical-themed items like fruity mango and pineapple body lotions, lip balms, and even organic coconut soaps. It’s a fun little space to browse while waiting for your meal—or to pick up a unique souvenir!

Don’t Miss the Rooftop View
If you follow the staircase connected to the restaurant, you’ll find a cozy rooftop area—and the view from up there is just as refreshing. It’s the perfect spot to take in the island breeze and enjoy the stunning scenery from a different angle.

・What Is Fijian Food Like?
A Blend of Island Flavors and Indian Spices
Fijian cuisine is a unique mix of island-style cooking and Indian influences, offering a rich and multicultural taste experience. Root vegetables like taro and cassava are staples, often served alongside fresh fish or chicken. The dishes are generally simple, hearty, and healthy.
One of Fiji’s signature dishes is Kokoda—fresh fish marinated in coconut milk, lime, and spices. Indian-inspired dishes like curry and roti are also everyday favorites across the islands, bringing bold flavors to the local table. If you’re into tropical vibes and wholesome meals, Fijian food is definitely worth trying!

Coconut Shrimp Curry with a Tropical Twist – Fijian Style
This time, I ordered the Fijian-style Coconut Shrimp Curry.
In Fiji, it’s common to cook fresh seafood with freshly squeezed coconut milk, and this restaurant takes it up a notch by using over 12 types of herbs and spices along with plenty of rich coconut milk.
The aroma and vibrant colors were enough to get my appetite going—and the flavor didn’t disappoint. It’s mild and comforting at first, with the spices slowly building in depth as you eat.
I paired it with a pretty pink guava juice that not only looked great in photos but also matched the curry perfectly. At ¥2,950 (about $19 USD) for just the curry, it’s definitely not the cheapest option—but honestly, the quality and flavor made it totally worth it.

Is Coconut Shrimp Curry Healthy? Let’s Talk Beauty & Nutrition
Since I’ve been more focused on my beauty routine and dieting lately, I naturally got curious about the calorie count and health benefits of this dish. This Coconut Shrimp Curry comes in at around 500 to 700 kcal, depending on the portion size.
Shrimp is high in protein and rich in antioxidants, which are great for skin health. Coconut milk contains medium-chain fatty acids that can support metabolism and energy, and the spices used in the curry are known for their antioxidant and metabolism-boosting properties. So honestly, this dish isn’t just tasty—it might be a surprisingly beauty-friendly and diet-conscious choice!
It also came with a fresh salad on the side, which made the meal feel even more balanced and nourishing.
Fun fact: Fiji has more coconut trees than people. No wonder coconuts are such a big part of their food culture!

A Touch of Fiji in a Bottle
While self-serve water was available, I couldn’t resist ordering a bottle of Fiji Water. The bottle design totally screams “tropical getaway”—with its hibiscus flower and ocean-inspired look, it’s almost too pretty to drink. It added the perfect island vibe to the whole dining experience!

Other Dishes That Caught My Eye at Airando Fiji Restaurant
Aside from the curry, a few other dishes really stood out on the menu—like Kokoda, a Fijian-style marinated fish dish, garlic butter mussels, and Fijian roti. The roti especially intrigued me. It reminded me of Okinawan tacos, featuring tender Okinawan pork simmered in a tomato-based sauce, topped with island vegetables and sweet pineapple. It felt like a perfect fusion of Okinawa and Fiji on one plate!
・Kouri Island South Observation Point

Don’t Miss This Scenic Stop Before Crossing the Bridge
Just before crossing over to Kouri Island, you’ll find the Kouri Island South Observatory—a perfect spot to pause and soak in the view. There’s free parking, so you can easily stop to snap some photos, take a relaxing stroll along the beach, and enjoy the sea breeze.
From here, you get a stunning panoramic view of the iconic Kouri Bridge, so be sure to drop by on your way to the island!
So, how did you like this little taste of Fiji on Kouri Island? This tropical-inspired restaurant isn’t just a great place to try Fijian cuisine—it also makes for a perfect café stop during your trip to Okinawa’s main island. It’s a relaxing resort-style spot where you can truly feel like you’ve escaped to paradise.
And if you’re in the mood to dive even deeper into that tropical vibe—or if you’re a fan of coconut flavors—don’t miss the ice cream shop below for a sweet, island-style treat.
