Thank you for visiting my blog. I’m RiRi, a Japanese blogger who runs a blog centered around travel and lifestyle, capturing photos and videos along the way.
I share my experiences, impressions, and recommendations to help those who are traveling to France for the first time.
I’ll be focusing on meals after moving from Paris to Cannes in the south of France this time.
I love wine, but I’m not very familiar with French cuisine. It’s challenging to decide on a menu in an unfamiliar food culture, but I gave it a try.
I think it would be helpful to research how to read the menu and what kind of dishes are available before traveling, so consider this a preparatory guide for your trip.
・[Lunch] Salmon Crepe in Cannes
Hura Cannes Restaurant 2 Rue Félix Faure, 06400 Cannes,France
I had a limited stay of three days and two nights in Cannes, but I decided to enter a restaurant I found while strolling through the city.
All the male staff wore white shirts and had a refreshing white-based style.
The weather was good, and the terrace seats were comfortable. Perhaps because it was just before the lunch order time ended, the waiter hurried me a bit, so I couldn’t take my time looking at the menu, but I had already decided to have a crepe. I requested a seat that looked relaxing.
First, I ordered a glass of rosé. The crepe was a smoked salmon crepe. I actually wanted to try a galette, but I ended up not having one during this trip to France.
Cheers to Cannes.
Just coming to this kind of restaurant makes you feel like you’re really abroad. I hardly saw any Japanese people during my stay. While waiting for my order, I took photos and people-watched. The terrace was open and airy, so I felt completely comfortable being there alone.
SALÉES Crêpes Saumon 15.90€ → 2,700 yen. Quite a surprising price for Japanese people!
Fromage, smoked salmon, fresh spinach leaves.
Squeeze some lemon on it before eating. It pairs well with the rosé.
After having a glass of wine, the total cost was about 3,700 yen, but the good thing is that casual restaurants and cafes like this don’t require tips.
There are countless places to have lunch, so if you’re walking around the city and find a place with a good atmosphere, you can just walk in without any particular plans.
Of course, there’s also McDonald’s.
・[Dinner] A Highly Recommended Restaurant I Want to Visit Again: Le BÀO
Le BAO (Bouche à Oreille) 7 Rue des Gabres, 06400 Cannes, France
Since I liked the restaurant near the hotel where I was staying, I took some time to research and decided on a restaurant called Le BAO.
It’s located in an alley off Antibes Street, next to Italian restaurants and piano bars.
The place was not crowded, which made it easy for me to go in alone. A girl who was also alone came in after checking the menu on the restaurant’s signboard, so the timing was perfect.
The owner was friendly and left a great impression. The staff also made sure I was enjoying my meal from afar, which made the restaurant very comfortable.
I actually enjoyed the food so much that I had dinner there both nights of my stay. The next day, the place was fully booked, and the owner seemed very busy.
Once again, I struggled with the menu written in unfamiliar French, but I know what I like, so I ordered a glass of Pinot Noir first.
For example, the menu included terms like “Bourgogne,” “Provence,” and “Champagne.”
Even though I studied a bit of French before the trip, that’s about my level. However, terms like red wine and white wine naturally caught my eye, so it was definitely worth studying a bit beforehand.
On the first day, I chose the recommended menu item on the signboard: Filet de daurade sauce vierge poêlée de legumes for €28.
Even in a casual bistro-like place, this price is quite high, so one can only imagine how much it would cost in a fancy restaurant. It’s a bit nerve-wracking for Japanese travelers.
Since there were so many options on the menu, I contacted my French friend, sent a photo of the menu, and asked, “Which one would you choose?”
Normally, I wouldn’t choose sea bream right away, but since Cannes is by the sea, I figured the fish must be delicious! And it was the right choice!!
The girl from earlier was also dining at the table next to mine, so we chatted a bit. She mentioned she was in Cannes for work.
I also ordered another glass of wine. It was perfect.
The memory of the meal I had on the first day lingered, so I went back the next night. The restaurant was fully booked inside, so I ate at a terrace table. I could hear conversations in French from people dining with their friends, and although I didn’t understand what they were saying, it sounded fun.
On the second day, I decided to have meat! It was excellent as well.
I wanted to go out more and explore some bars, but since I had to travel the next day, I returned to the hotel early and spent a relaxing evening watching TV.
Good night.
